California will hold a special election on November 4, 2025, to vote on Proposition 50, a constitutional amendment. The special election was called on August 21, 2025, after Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill No. 280.

What is Proposition 50?

According to the city of San Francisco, the proposition would require California to use district boundaries that were adopted in Assembly Bill No. 604 for all congressional elections until the commission redraws the district boundaries in 2031. This would temporarily override the Citizens Redistricting Commission, which has historically been tasked with adjusting the boundaries. You can learn more about Proposition 50 here.
