Deputies arrested and then released a man who was seen on doorbell cameras carrying a knife and approaching homes in the Arden area, leaving residents shaken and worried.The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said on Saturday that Brian Mattson, 56, was approaching homes on La Sierra Drive on Thursday evening with the knife in his hand.Mattson was found and arrested on Saturday morning, the sheriff’s office said, but investigators determined they could only charge him with criminal trespassing. The sheriff’s office said Mattson was on felony probation, but Sacramento County Probation declined to place a hold on him, resulting in him being released two hours after his booking.KCRA 3 has reached out to Sacramento County Probation regarding Mattson. The sheriff’s office released Mattson’s photo to the public for “public safety awareness” and is asking anyone who has information about him or who may have been a victim to come forward.Rebecca Breen said she and her husband were watching TV around 8:30 p.m. Thursday when they received alerts from their doorbell camera. “We started getting alerts on our phone that there was action on our motion on our ring camera at the front door,” Breen said. She described the moment they realized someone was at their door. “We heard a loud knock and we looked in the ring camera and we noticed that there was something very strange going on,” Breen said. The footage showed a man standing at their door with a knife, appearing to make repeated stabbing motions. “It was terrifying. It was absolutely terrifying,” Breen said. Breen said she immediately called 911. “First reaction. We called 911 and asked for them to, that we needed them immediately” she said. Sacramento County Sheriff’s Lt. Amar Gandhi said deputies responded quickly after receiving multiple calls from residents. “There were several residents calling, stuff is actually caught on ring camera. So our deputies got there, got in the area actually just within minutes. But by then he’d fled,” Gandhi said. “It’s pretty scary stuff. He’s going out there literally thrashing on doors with knives. But fortunately, again, nobody hurt. People were very smart in the sense of lock the doors, stayed inside and called us.”Breen expressed concern about the incident. “I do believe that we were a random target. I don’t think that we were specifically targeted, but I think it’s very scary because if it wasn’t us, it’s going to be someone else. I mean, clearly he was not in his right frame of mind at all,” Breen said. Some residents also expressed concern about the time it took for law enforcement to engage with them.
