Austin FC fell in a narrow 2-1 defeat at LAFC in Game 1 of the teams’ Audi MLS Cup Playoffs Round One Best-of-3 series.
The only goal of a close first half came via a bit of bad fortune for the Verde & Black. LAFC’s Ryan Hollingshead played a low pass across the six-yard box which deflected in off Brendan Hines-Ike.
Austin responded well coming out of halftime. LAFC’s defense failed to clear the ball in the 63rd minute, and Owen Wolff then tapped it to an open Jon Gallagher who found the net from close range.
LAFC regained the lead late with the help of another deflection. Denis Bouanga’s shot ricocheted over Brad Stuver and fell to Nathan Ordaz right on the goal line.
The teams meet again on Sunday night at Q2 Stadium for Game 2.
