Regal Edwards Cinemas at The Marketplace has submitted a request to the Bakersfield Planning Commission for a permit to sell beer and wine to moviegoers. The proposal for the 14-auditorium facility at 9000-G Ming Ave. is scheduled for review during a public meeting on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

The theater aims to obtain a Type 41 Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) License, which facilitates beer and wine sales for patrons aged 21 and older when paired with a restaurant setting. According to the commission agenda, distilled spirits would remain prohibited, with exceptions only for specific cooking ingredients.

Eligibility for the license follows a 2025 kitchen renovation that allowed the 1,321-seat venue to offer full-meal packages. Under the proposed guidelines, all managers and staff members aged 18 or older must secure ABC “Alcohol Server Certification” within one month of their hire date.

Bakersfield city staff suggested the commission approve the conditional use permit to align the venue with modern consumer expectations. Officials noted that the move would support the local economy through job retention while providing high-quality recreational amenities for the community.

The Planning Commission highlighted that similar requests have been granted for other local entertainment hubs. According to city officials, approved venues include AMC Bakersfield 6, Studio Movie Grill, and Reading Cinemas at the Valley Plaza.

City staff described the potential benefits of the permit in the official agenda documents, noting its impact on the local service industry.
