Principals and administrators negotiated a tentative deal with the San Francisco Unified School District on Tuesday morning, averting a strike, according to Mission Local

SFUSD principals agreed to a $7,500 pay raise for those covered by the United Administrators of San Francisco union. They also agreed to a 2% raise over each of the next three years and a clause requiring a raise when other district unions, such as the teachers union, receive one. Principals and administrators called off a planned walkout and strike to demand better pay and support amid staff shortages. Facing budget cuts, SFUSD had let go of hundreds of educators last year.

“I think we were able to get a fair deal that recognizes the work we do and also works within this sort of dim fiscal reality we’re living in,” Anna Klafter, principal at Independence High School and president of the principals union, told Mission Local. Klafter said she had not expected to exit the 16-hour negotiation with a deal.

According to the union, a neutral “fact-finding” panel member, Donald Raczka, co-elected by SFUSD and the principals union, stated that he “didn’t feel like hearing both sides” and wrote a 30-page report, with Klafter recalling him saying, “I’m going to get you guys to reach a settlement.” The agreement follows ongoing contentious negotiations between SFUSD and the teachers’ union.
