Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced her endorsement of Karen Bass in her re-election campaign for Mayor of Los Angeles in a statement released on Monday.

“Mayor Karen Bass is the leader Los Angeles needs right now,” Harris said. “She has done what so many said couldn’t be done — the first ever two-year decline in homelessness, reducing crime to levels this city hasn’t seen since the 1960s, and refusing to back down when the federal government came after our neighbors. She has my full support for re-election.”

Harris, a former U.S. Senator and California attorney general, joins the other four Los Angeles County Supervisors who have officially endorsed Bass for re-election, Bass’ campaign announced in March.

Supervisors Hilda Solis, Holly Mitchell, Janice Hahn and Kathryn Barger called Bass a trailblazer and the right leader as the LA County Board looks to continue to work closely with the city of LA.

The alliances between the four supervisors and Bass go way back as they all worked with the former congresswoman and former community organizer in the past.

“I am deeply honored to have the support of Vice President Kamala Harris, who has spent her career fighting for the people of Los Angeles and our country,” Bass said. “Her endorsement is a reflection of what we’re building together: a Los Angeles that is safer, more affordable, and unafraid to fight for its values.”

Bass’ campaign is focused on the homelessness crisis, affordability, infrastructure and safety in Los Angeles.

According to Karen Bass’ office, homelessness is down 17.5% since she took office.

Her office states that she has also accelerated 42,000 units of affordable housing and signed into law the city’s first update to the rent stabilization law in 40 years to cap increases and strengthen tenant protections.

Since taking office, Bass has also issued an executive order to develop LA’s first-ever Comprehensive Infrastructure Plan to repair sidewalks, streets, and streetlights.

Bass will join two challenger in the race for mayor, Councilmember Nithya Raman and former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, for a live debate Wednesday night hosted by NBC4 and Telemundo 52.
