Authorities on Monday warned residents about an increase in overnight catalytic converter thefts across the city and urged the public not to confront suspects, who may be armed, according to the Whittier Police Department.
Police said the thefts have followed a pattern in recent weeks, with Toyota sedans frequently targeted. Officials emphasized, however, that all parked vehicles remain at risk.
The warning comes after a recent incident in which a resident who interrupted a theft in progress had a firearm pointed at them, highlighting the potential danger of engaging with suspects.
In response to the rise in thefts, the department has increased overnight patrols in neighborhood streets in an effort to deter the crimes.
Authorities recommend residents remain vigilant and take preventative measures, including parking vehicles in garages or well-lit areas, using home security systems, and installing protective devices that restrict access to catalytic converters.
Police urge anyone who sees suspicious activity to contact Whittier Police Department dispatch at 562-567-9240. In emergencies, residents should call 911.
