Authorities have arrested at least nine people and impounded 77 vehicles in connection with Sunday’s takeover on the Bay Bridge, officials announced Monday.

In videos shared across multiple social media platforms, dozens of dirt bike and ATV riders could be seen doing stunts on the upper deck of the bridge during the illegal stunt show.

On Monday, Oakland police Chief James Beere said his officers had been investigating the group of riders for the last couple months, and they were ready to take action when the group showed up over the weekend.

“The planned operation involved more than 100 additional officers from multiple Oakland departments and units,” Beere said.

Beere said his officers tracked the group’s movements, beginning with a stop in San Leandro and followed by a stop in East Oakland to unload motorbikes and ATVs. The group then rode to Lake Merritt, Berkeley, over the bridge to San Francisco and back, creating chaos along the way.

According to San Francisco police, the group arrived in the city at about 4:45 p.m.

“This lasted over 45 minutes, and they were in our downtown area and Ingleside districts,” San Francisco police Chief Derrick Lew said. “They quickly overwhelmed intersections and caused great risk to public safety.”

As the group headed back to Oakland and approached the Bay Bridge toll plaza, Oakland police, California Highway Patrol and San Francisco police jumped into action and started to make arrests.

Videos posted to multiple social media platforms showed some riders abandoning their vehicles and running.

Nine people in total were arrested. Five can expect misdemeanor charges, while four more face felonies.

“During this operation, one individual attempted to flee on foot, jumped a fence and decided to dive into the water,” Beere said.

According to the Oakland Fire Department, that person was rescued and then arrested.

In addition to the arrests on the bridge, Beere said officers also arrested two promoters before the ride and they impounded the vehicles used to haul all of the motorbikes and ATVs to Oakland.

For those who managed to get away, Beere said authorities are working to track them down and take them into custody.
