The Giants won a close opener on Monday in a 3-2 final. The Padres got off to a fast start with a solo shot from Jackson Merrill. But San Diego couldn’t score again until the ninth inning on another solo homer from Ramon Laureano, but its rally came up short with just three hits on the day. Casey Schmitt came right back in the bottom of the first with a homer of his own, with the Giants regaining the lead in the inning. Rafael Devers drove in another in the sixth on a sac fly that proved to be the game-winner.
But it was Trevor McDonald who had the best game of the night for San Francisco. After the Merrill homer, McDonald collected himself to earn his first win of the season. The righty went seven innings, only giving up one run on two hits while striking out eight.
