Fitness spaces have been used as a social hub in Los Angeles for years. But now is it becoming more?

Third spaces are the ones that don’t include an area related to work or home. In Los Angeles, that space has often been found in fitness hubs. With places like Equinox and SolidCore, working out has been a natural place to socialize for years. But is it shifting further?

With a generalized focus on wellness as a city, the idea of contributing to this community brings out a new and intimate side to new connections over shared passions.

For instance, Stride L.A. has been organizing a run club dedicated to making running fun again. With DJs and music, drinks by brands such as 818, and a cold plunge available, it feels like more than just exercising, but an experience. Starting out small, reports have shown lower turnout leading into to hundreds of people attending events. Who knew this is what we needed all along?

Puppy Yoga is another popular form of a third space that involves wellness integrated with socializing in Los Angeles. By supporting adoption and mental health initiatives, purchasing and participating in a class makes room for relaxation and strong shared connections.

Coming together in these ways brings out the best parts in each of us. Attending events, such as these, in the spirit of wanting to improve yourself, allows us to be surrounded by the people who are in the mindset. Through dedicating an hour or so with each other, while doing so sometimes changes everything. Coming together, not inside a stuffy gym or the overstimulation of an intense workout class, brings fitness to a new level of understanding for the community, as well as fostering deeper connections.
