OAKLAND — A woman has pleaded no contest to threatening a school official after police say she called the Westlake Middle School 17 times with threats to “come up to the school to shoot it up,” court records show.
Makela Mekwunye, 32, was charged in April with criminal threats against a specific official and with threatening a school. Police say that starting on March 26, she used her own phone to repeatedly call the school with threats or harassing remarks, and later claimed the school official she was angry with was the real culprit, who had framed her.
Oakland police say, though, they found videos on Mekwunye’s phone where she recorded herself making threatening phone calls to the school. They also allegedly found a picture of her posing with a Glock pistol, court records show.
Mekwunye is set to be sentenced on May 22, and remains jailed in the meantime. She has prior convictions for robbery and assault with a firearm. Police say she blamed the school official for the death of her family member, who died of natural causes.
