California Capitol dome to shine red for missing and murdered Indigenous people
PRESENTED DURING NEXT WEEK’S CITY COUNCIL MEETING. ALL RIGHT, LET’S GIVE YOU A LIVE LOOK AT THE STATE CAPITOL. THAT’S WHERE TODAY, CASES INVOLVING MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED. KCRA 3’S MELANIE WINGO JOINING US NOW LIVE WITH HOW LAWMAKERS AND COMMUNITY GROUPS ARE OBSERVING. MMIP AWARENESS WEEK. MELANIE. WELL, ALTHOUGH YOU CAN’T SEE IT AT THIS MOMENT BECAUSE OF THE LIGHT OF DAY, THE CAPITOL DOME WILL BE ILLUMINATED ONCE AGAIN TONIGHT IN RED IN HONOR OF MMIP AWARENESS WEEK THAT’S MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS PEOPLE CASES. THIS WEEK IS AN AWARENESS WEEK WHERE ACTIVITIES AND OBSERVANCES WILL ALL HAPPEN HERE AT THE CAPITOL. THIS MORNING, THERE IS SET TO BE A BIG NEWS CONFERENCE ABOUT WHAT CALIFORNIA IS DOING TO DEAL WITH THE MMIP CRISIS. TRIBAL LEADERS, LEGISLATORS, THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE REPRESENTATIVES, SURVIVORS AND ADVOCATES ARE ALL SCHEDULED TO ATTEND. AND THEN LATER THIS MORNING, THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON NATIVE AMERICAN AFFAIRS IS GOING TO BE REVIEWING THE STATE’S PROGRESS IN INTERVENTIONS HAPPENING IN EFFORT TO COMBAT THE CRISIS. THEN, THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING, AWARENESS RAISING EFFORTS WILL CONTINUE WITH A CANDLELIGHT VIGIL ROUNDING OUT THE DAY LAST FALL, KCRA THREE REPORTED ON HOW CALIFORNIA IS THE FIFTH HIGHEST NUMBER OF MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. CASES. THAT’S THE LOCATION WHERE THESE CASES ARE ONE OF THE MOST PREVALENT IN THE COUNTRY, AND THAT THERE IS A TASK FORCE NOW COMPOSED OF AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT AND TRIBES FROM ACROSS THE REGION, HOPING TO TURN THE TIDE AND SOLVE SOME OF THOSE COLD CASES AND BACK OUT HERE LIVE, THE CAPITOL DOME AGAIN WILL BE ILLUMINATED IN RED TONIGHT THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS. AND AT THAT CANDLELIGHT VIGIL THIS EVENING, WE DO EXPECT AROUND 1000 PEOPLE TO BE IN ATTENDANCE.

The California State Capitol will illuminate its dome in red on Wednesday night to honor victims and survivors of missing and murdered Indigenous people during MMIP Awareness Week. Wednesday began with a news conference addressing what California is doing to solve more of these cases. State lawmakers from the Public Safety and Native American Affairs committees convened at the Capitol following the news conference.
