BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — CHP Bakersfield will deploy additional officers on Sunday, May 10, 2026, on Niles Street to reduce motorcycle crashes in the area.

Officers will be looking for both motorcyclists and drivers who commit violations that make roads dangerous for other drivers. Those violations include speeding, following too closely, unsafe lane changes and improper turning.

CHP said from January 2024 through December 2024, statistics showed that there were 97 injury crashes involving motorcycles. Ten crashes involving motorcyclists were fatal in the CHP Bakersfield Area jurisdiction.

CHP Bakersfield posted last week on social media about May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, titled “Get Educated and Ride Safe (GEARS) VIII.” The grant will fund CHP until September 30, 2026.
