Longtime Oakland Press reporter and columnist Pat Caputo has died after a battle with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, his family announced on social media on Thursday.
He was 67.
The post stated: “Today May 7th we lost Pat to cancer. Pat was surrounded by his family. Thank you for all your support. The Caputo family.”
Nicknamed “The Book,” Caputo, who worked for 97.1 FM The Ticket and Fox 2 Sports, after starting his journalism with Oakland Press from 1983-2020. His radio resume dates back to the mid-1990s.
He was a resident of Lake Orion.
Raised in St. Clair Shores before moving to Oakland County as a youth, Caputo went to Birmingham Groves High School and Michigan State University. After a brief span working at a newspaper in Three Rivers, he was hired to answer phones at The Oakland Press in May of 1983, then began covering prep sports a year later, before going on to cover the Tigers for 12 seasons and Lions for five for the newspaper
Caputo announced his cancer diagnosis in early January, after he’d been hospitalized. Later in the month, he thanked fans for their outpouring of support after his announcement.
