Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee declared May 6 “Delroy Lindo Day” at a City Hall event on Wednesday honoring the acclaimed 73-year-old stage and film actor, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for his role in Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” At the event’s finale, Lee presented Lindo with a key to the city and a proclamation recognizing the day.

Born in the United Kingdom, Lindo moved with his mother to the United States at age 16, where he later graduated with a master’s of fine arts degree from San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater. In 1996, he and his wife, Nashormeh N. R. Lindo — who is an artist, educator, independent curatorial consultant and arts advocate — settled in Oakland, where they have lived for the past 30 years.

Over the past 50 years, his notable film performances include roles in “Unprisoned,” “Malcolm X,” “Clockers,” “Get Shorty,” “The Cider House Rules” and Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods.” As a stage actor, he was nominated for a Tony in 1988 for his role in a production of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”

Wednesday’s event honored Lindo for “his contributions to film, TV, culture, and the global African diaspora.” It included a conversation between Lee and Lindo, monologues performed by Oakland School for the Arts students, a curated cinematic showcase of Lindo’s work and the presentation of a custom jersey from the Golden State Warriors.
