Traffic came to a stop on Highway 99 past Belmont after a CHP officer was injured in a crash near the transition to Highway 180 on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

A California Highway Patrol officer was injured in a crash on a Fresno highway Thursday.

CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said the crash happened at 6:18 p.m. on southbound Highway 99, near the transition to Highway 180, when the officer spotted a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder.

Salas said the officer was slowing down to render aid when a vehicle struck the patrol motorcycle from behind.

The officer was ejected onto the roadway and suffered moderate injuries.

The officer was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

According to Salas, the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

Traffic on the highway was gridlocked following the crash.
