Two Oakland police officers were injured and a suspect was shot early Friday after a traffic stop in the Eastlake area escalated when the suspect tried to flee, police said.
The shooting happened about 3:15 a.m. in the 1200 block of 9th Avenue, near International Boulevard, according to Oakland police.
Police said officers stopped a vehicle when they saw a firearm inside. The department did not immediately say why officers initiated the stop.
As the suspect attempted to drive away, police said, one officer was dragged and another was pinned between the suspect’s vehicle and a parked car. One officer then opened fire, striking the suspect.
Officers provided medical aid to the suspect until paramedics arrived, police said. The suspect and both injured officers were taken to a hospital and were listed in stable condition.
The names of the officers and the suspect were not immediately released. Police also did not disclose the extent of the officers’ injuries or where the suspect was shot.
The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave under department policy, police said.
The shooting is being investigated by the Oakland Police Department, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and the city’s Community Police Review Agency, according to police.
“The Oakland Police Department remains committed to transparency and understands community concerns,” the department said in a statement. “To ensure the investigation’s integrity, information is limited at this time. More details will be shared as soon as the investigation allows, and in compliance with the law.”
The shooting comes less than two weeks after Oakland police fatally shot a man in East Oakland on April 27. In that case, police said officers were responding to reports of an armed man pointing a gun at people.
