Hollywood Forever presents Día de los Muertos: We’ve gathered our treasured photographs, made marigold crowns, set up our altars, and baked the goodies our dearly departed loved best. Now we’ll summon every calacas in our friend group and make for Hollywood Forever Nov. 1 for this grand and ethereal extravaganza, which sells out each year. There are several other Día de los Muertos events happening across Southern California, including one devoted to pets at Wallis Annenberg PetSpace. Find a few events listed here or check with your city to find Nov. 1 and/or 2 festivities. Want to visit Olvera Street‘s spirited celebrations? Here are the details.
Happy Halloween: The weekend begins Friday night, which this week just happens to be, oh yes, oh shiver, oh ghosty goodness, none other than Oct. 31. Thousands of people will make for West Hollywood and the famous Halloween Carnaval, a sizable parade-tastic spectacular that will turn 40 in just a couple of years. The costumes are wowza, the spirit is fizzy, and the crowds are real: Know what you need to regarding street closures and transportation before making your way to West Hollywood.
Magnificent Mustached Monkeys: If you’ll be in the desert over the first weekend of November, or in the weeks/months/years to come, you’ll want to call upon The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens and the brand-new patas monkeys habitat. These charismatic animals are known for their incredible facial hair and adorable antics, making them favorites wherever they appear. This new Palm Desert troop is making headlines as the Living Desert is the only place to admire patas monkeys in Southern California. Their big debut? Nov. 1.
Movember begins: In other mustache news, Movember, the annual November-long campaign to raise money for men’s health, kicks off Nov. 1. You can grow a mustache or become a Mo Sister and raise funds, and finding/attending a local event is also a possibility. There is a Movember meet-up at the grand-opening of the patas monkey habitat in Palm Desert Nov. 1, if you’d like double the mustache moxie in one heartwarming go.
Best Friends Super Adoption Fair: November is starting with a sweet scritch, a throaty woof, and a silky purr, and we’re so stoked. For hundreds of adoptable pets — quite literally, hundreds, oh yes indeed — will be available for meeting/scritching/cuddling/homing at Rose Bowl Stadium Nov. 1 and 2. Food trucks, pet vendors, and other convivial offerings will orbit the uplifting event, with several rescue organizations set to show.
