The University of San Diego’s run in the NCAA men’s tennis championships ended Friday in Texas.

Top-ranked University of Texas defeated No. 17 USD 4-1 in a Sweet 16 match in Austin. USD finishes the season 22-6. Texas (27-6) advances to the eight-team NCAA Championships May 14-17 in Athens, Ga.

USD’s No. 1 singles player, Oliver Tarvet, picked up the Toreros’ lone point. The 19th-ranked Tarvet defeated second-ranked Sebastian Gorzny 6-4, 6-3 in his final match as a Torero.

The Toreros started off badly. Adrien Berrut and Lambert Ruland (6-0) and Manvy Balciunas and Vincent Marysko (6-2) dropped their doubles sets, giving Texas the match’s opening point. USD had won the doubles point in 22 of its first 28 dual meets.

Marysko and Ruland then lost their singles matches in straight sets ahead of Tarvet’s win. Sebastian Eriksson defeated USD senior Stian Klaassen for the Longhorns’ clinching point. Balciunas, who is the 94th-ranked singles player in the NCAA, was leading his match when the winning point was recorded.

PLNU teams advance

Two Point Loma Nazarene University teams advanced on Friday:

• The PLNU women’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships with a 4-2 victory over Hawaii Pacific in the Super Regionals hosted by the Sea Lions. The 16-team NCAA Championships will be played in Surprise, Ariz., starting May 19.

The 21st-ranked Sea Lions (18-4) claimed the doubles point, with 61st-ranked Alina Kupfer, Perla Conde Vendrell and Zoe Marley winning their singles matches against 22nd-ranked Hawaii Pacific (16-6). Kupfer-Conde Vendrell and Marley-Melissa Zirkle won their doubles sets.

• The eighth-ranked PLNU baseball team (44-10) won the PacWest Conference Tournament and will host an NCAA Division II West Regionals May 14-16 as a No. 2 seed.

Josiah Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBIs and Mason Cook hit a two-run home run as PLNU defeated Concordia 9-1 in Santa Barbara to complete a three-game tournament sweep. Devin Norton held Concordia to one run on four hits over seven innings.

Cal State San Marcos stays alive

Zech Samayoa belted a grand slam and Jake Larson hit a two-run homer to lead Cal State San Marcos (33-16) to an 8-4 elimination victory over 11th-ranked and top-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay to keep the Cougars alive in the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Tournament in San Bernardino.

Meanwhile, Zoe Karam and Czar Fleischman homered as third-ranked Cal State San Marcos (49-7) defeated Cal Poly Humboldt 4-3 in a softball elimination game after losing earlier Friday. The Cougars advance to the championship game of the CCAA Tournament in Hayward.
Palomar wins

Second-ranked Palomar College’s baseball team (39-5) scored twice in the top of the 13th, then saw relief pitcher Joey Halter work out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning to defeat Saddleback College 12-11 and complete a two-game sweep in the best-of-three California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regionals semifinals.

3C2A softball

Palomar and Mesa both won their opening games Friday in their best-of-three 3C2A Super Regionals softball series.

Alexis Huey (Poway High School) had a double and a home run in three at-bats to lead second-ranked Palomar (40-1) to an 8-4 win over Antelope Valley.

Itzel Soto (Otay Ranch High School) and Anabella Heguy (Santana High School) were each 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and Faith Balestreri (West Hills High School) was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead Mesa (29-13) to a 14-6 win over El Camino.
