Cathedral Catholic has claimed the last four CIF San Diego Section Open Division beach volleyball championships over Torrey Pines.

That all changed on Saturday at Mesa College. Third-seeded Torrey Pines dethroned the top-seeded Dons, 3-2, highlighted by the Falcons’ No. 3 pairing Lilia Decker and Conner Oxberry prevailing 21-15, 20-22, 16-14 over Onna Laverty and Herlow Jarvis.

“It feels like an out-of-body experience,” said Oxborrow as she and Decker won on the eighth match point, including five at the end of the second set. “It feels so good because it’s such a personal win, having been in the finals since the program (began).”

Cathedral Catholic (14-2) and Torrey Pines (21-3) split the first two matches. Cathedral’s Lauren Honson and Jojo Wilson won in straight sets, 21-16, 21-14. Torrey Pines’ Jaycee Mack and Lily Peto legged out a three-set win, 21-11, 21-23, 15-11.

In the other two matches, Torrey Pines’ Sam Krystkowiak and Kelly Randolph teamed up for a 21-5, 21-12 win, while Cathedral’s No. 4 pairing of Ella Hahmilton and Georgia Brennon won 21-7, 21-10.

“I’m super proud of our program,” Falcons coach Sean Pope said. “Being able to hold up the banner, put it up there for all the people who have put in the work and all the last five years, it’s super fulfilling.”

Division 1: No. 2 San Marcos 3, No. 1 Carlsbad 2

Similarly, the Division 1 crown came down to the No. 3 pairing between No. 2 San Marcos and No. 1 Carlsbad.

San Marcos’ Reese Braidie and Eliya Dixon had the championship point in the second set. However, No. 1 Carlsbad’s Ellie Eoolwine and Rylie Vredevert nailed the final two points to force a third set.

The Knights (19-4) and Lancers (18-4) were knotted at 10 when Braidie had a medical incident, leading to a timeout. The Knights’ duo then took five of the final six points to win 21-11, 20-22, 15-11 the match and the section title.

“I just couldn’t catch a breath,” Braidie said. “I was so overwhelmed with what was going on around and I was just tired. I was really anxious, and then just taking that time out just helped me to realize that it’s just a game, and that everyone that I love is around me.”

San Marcos’ No. 2 and No. 5 pairs, Eva Deninger and Maddie Waldron and Kate Strickland and Addie Mulder, won their matches.

Then, Carlsbad’s No. 1 and No. 4 pairs, Ashley Chuba and Olivia Town and Avery Brick and Marseille Varela, won their matches, both in three sets.

The championship tripleheader began with No. 3 Eastlake defeating top-seeded Our Lady of Peace 4-1 for the Division 2 title.

“It’s hard to go back-to-back, but I know all the girls put in a lot of work this whole season,” Eastlake coach Lizbeth Lau said. “For us to represent the South Bay, it proves that we could play down there.”

The Titans (12-11) won the first two matches. Ari Ruperto and Noelle Barcas won in straight sets, 21-18, 21-13 over OLP’s Cammie Kovar and Scarlett McMahon.

Then, Eastlake’s Paige Sinclair and Kaylia Elsas gutted out a three-set win, 21-17, 19-21, 15-13 over Caroline O’Neal and Caroline Nail.

“We really just pulled it out,” said Sinclair, who completed her first season of beach volleyball after primarily being an indoor player. “We had to slow it down, take our time and just get the ball in.”

Then in the other three matches, the Titans’ No. 4 pairing of Daniella Garcia and Arianna Villalobos won in straight sets, 21-8, 21-17. The victory gave Eastlake its second straight Division 2 crown.
