San Diego State’s baseball team clinched a berth in the Mountain West Tournament late Friday night with an 11-1 victory over San Jose State at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The win was the Aztecs’ seventh straight in the conference. They are now 31-19 overall and 14-5 in Mountain West play, leading Air Force and Washington State by 1½ games going into Saturday night’s middle game of the three-game series against the Spartans.

The Aztecs’ regular season ends next weekend with three games at UNLV. The Mountain West Tournament will be played May 21-24 in Mesa, Ariz.

Shortstop Jabin Trosky led the Aztecs in Friday night’s run-rule, seven-inning victory by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Designated hitter Anthony Marnell IV hit a two-run home run, and center fielder Jake Jackson (Madison High School) was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs. Starting pitcher Rohan Lettow (5-1) gave up one run on three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in six innings.

Tough day for CSUSM

Cal State San Marcos saw both its fourth-ranked softball team and surging baseball team lose in their respective California Collegiate Athletic Association tournaments on Saturday.

The regular-season champion softball team (50-8) lost to second-seeded Cal State East Bay 5-1 Saturday afternoon in the winner-take-all CCAA championship game after defeating CSEB 5-2 Saturday morning.

Czar Fleischman helped the Cougars reach the championship game by going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Rae D’Amato was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run. Zoe Karam was 2-for-4 with a triple and left fielder Marissa Morales was 3-for-3. Morales was also 3-for-3 with a walk and a run in the championship game loss.

The Cougars are still expected to land a berth in the NCAA Regionals, which start Thursday.

The CSUSM baseball team (33-17) was eliminated by Cal Poly Pomona 8-6 Friday night despite two home runs and five RBIs by Zech Samayoa. CSUSM lost both games against Cal Poly Pomona in the CCAA Tournament after defeating the Mustangs in three of four games the previous weekend.

The Cougars could also land a berth in an NCAA West Regionals next week.

Palomar, Mesa win

Second-ranked Palomar College (41-2) and third-seeded Mesa College (30-13) won their Super Regionals at home Saturday to advance to next week’s California Community College Athletic Association State Softball Championships in Bakersfield.

Palomar defeated Antelope Valley 15-7 in the rubber match of a three-game series after the visitors evened the series Saturday morning with an 11-9 win in eight innings. Lauren Doepping was 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs in the decisive win. Ava Alvarez (Coastal Academy) was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs.

Mesa College completed a two-game sweep of El Camino College with a 13-10 victory Saturday. The Olympians scored 27 runs on 35 hits in the two wins. Madelyn Egan (Point Loma High School) was 4-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and three RBIs Saturday. Itzel Soto (Otay Ranch High School) was 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs. Ariele Torres (Otay Ranch High School) and first baseman Alexis Serrano (Mater Dei Catholic High School) both went 3-for-5.
