A body was found inside the burned-down house near the scene of Friday’s deadly shooting in Santa Clara, the police department announced on Saturday.
On Friday, a person reported hearing about eight or nine gunshots at about 12:30 p.m. around Serra and Enright Avenues, according to initial police communications.
Officers were heard saying they believed a man was walking to his car, possibly from a house, when another man shot him multiple times. Shortly after, the house went up in flames.
Police confirmed the victim died at the scene.
That evening, police said officers, with the assistance of drones, found a body inside the back of the burned home. At the time, authorities said the home had significant structural damage and still presented ongoing hazards.
On Saturday at around 11 a.m., the home was determined safe for entry from the Santa Clara Fire Department, officials said. Authorities said investigators were then able to approach the body.
The police department noted it is believed this was a targeted attack with no further threat to public safety. The circumstances associated with this incident are under investigation.
