Man convicted for deadly shooting at Rancho Cordova house party

A Sacramento County judge sentenced Amyis Coogler 40 years to life in prison for the shooting death of 20-year-old Corey Shearer at a Rancho Cordova house party in August 2022, according to prosecutors.In March 2026, a jury convicted Coogler of second-degree murder and found the allegation of using a firearm causing death to be true. On Aug. 5, 2022, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting at a house party where Shearer was found on the lawn with four gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.Prosecutors said Coogler shot Shearer four times on the lawn outside the party. Despite surveillance video showing Coogler escaping, the case went without an arrest for 18 months. In February 2024, detectives linked Coogler to the crime using DNA evidence, witness testimony, and surveillance video. DNA collected matched Coogler, including a firearm that was determined to be used in the shooting. Coogler was 17 at the time of the shooting, but was tried as an adult.
