SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Drivers planning to travel through central San Diego on Saturday should prepare for traffic impacts as all lanes of southbound State Route 163 from Interstate 8 to Interstate 5 will be closed for maintenance work.

According to Caltrans, the closure is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. while crews pick up litter, trim trees, remove overgrown brush, and repair damaged pavement along the heavily traveled corridor.

The closure will also impact several connecting ramps, including:

Eastbound and westbound I-8 ramps to southbound SR-163

Washington Street on-ramp to southbound SR-163

Robinson Avenue on-ramp to southbound SR-163

San Diego Metropolitan Transit System busses will continue operating through the closure area with escorted access, Caltrans officials said.

Drivers heading eastbound on I-8 will be detoured onto eastbound I-8 to southbound I-5, then continue to the northbound SR-163 connector ramp.

Motorists traveling westbound on I-8 will be redirected to southbound I-805, then to southbound SR-15 and westbound SR-94 before reconnecting to northbound I-5 and SR-163.

Transportation officials urged drivers to slow down and remain alert in the work zones.

“Motorists are reminded to be ‘work zone alert’ if traveling in the area and to watch for highway workers and moving construction equipment,” Caltrans noted in a press release.

Officials said the maintenance schedule could change due to weather, traffic incident or other operational issues.
