BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Edwards movie theater in The Marketplace on Ming Avenue got the city’s approval Thursday to start selling alcohol to moviegoers.
The Bakersfield Planning Commission unanimously approved the conditional use permit during its regular meeting May 7, with two of the seven commissioners absent.

Some commissioners expressed concern about the area reportedly having the highest reports of loitering and incidents involving minors in the city, as well as losing family-friendly locations that don’t allow alcohol.
However, the commissioners said there aren’t any reasons to reject the permit.
Regal Edwards Cinemas is a 1,321-capacity theater at 9000-G Ming Ave.
The permit lets the theater apply for a license that would allow for the sale of beer and wine in partnership with a restaurant. Distilled spirits would not be allowed except specific liqueurs used for cooking.
If no one files an appeal against the permit to the Bakersfield City Council in 10 days, the permit will go into effect.
