On May 5, Vice President JD Vance said this about a task force’s crackdown on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) fraud: “If you are wealthy enough to afford a Lamborghini, then you are wealthy enough to not receive SNAP benefits from the American people.”
In San Diego County, SNAP helps 372,000 people — most of them kids, seniors, people with disabilities and, apparently, Lamborghinis — put food on the table each month.
In 2025, Congress took a hatchet to SNAP to pay for new tax cuts for the rich. Part of those cuts requires states to cover SNAP benefit costs for the first time ever.
A new farm bill is being debated right now, and lawmakers could stop this terrible cost-sharing rule. Any farm legislation that Congress considers this year must include SNAP. I demand our members of Congress reject any farm bill or farm bailout that does not undo these cruel cuts to SNAP.
