What to KnowSeveral scenic pleasure trains can be found around CaliforniaThe Skunk Train in Mendocino County, Roaring Camp Railroads near Santa Cruz, Railtown 1897 in Gold Country and the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento all offer holiday-themed experiences and outingsTickets, details, and dates are available at each train’s site; weekends and holiday-close dates can book up quickly

THE NORTH POLE? It’s a super-long flight, as any busy elf knows, and anyone suddenly arriving unannounced would likely disrupt the festive flow of the World’s Most Famous Toy Factory. Still, there are shorter seasonal excursions, closer to where we are, and while they might not all be inspired by the North Pole, some are, while others embrace the general upbeat air of the holidays. Those journeys occur on the scenic trains of California, and there are a few of them to enjoy, including the world-famous Skunk Train of Mendocino County. Each train is a little different — one locomotive might be about lights, while other trips are very much about the merriment of Kris Kringle and/or carolers — so perusing what the various attractions boast is important. Also important? Booking well before late November arrives, ho, ho, ho.

THE SKUNK TRAIN… will go in search of a massive living Christmas tree, with a departure from Willits. It’s a 16-mile adventure, with “cheerful tunes” and snacks inspired by the yuletide, with redwoods just beyond the windows. The Holiday Lights Train, which is a Roaring Camp Railroads classic, will chugga-chugga into Santa Cruz, all to take in some twinkle and glitter on select November and December weekends. And make for Sacramento or Gold Country for a trip on the Polar Express. The California State Railroad Museum will present several trips on select dates in November and December, while Railtown 1897 is heading into the holiday magic starting after Thanksgiving. Advance tickets are important for all of these trips and weekend days (and nights) do sell out, choo choo.
