Two men have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly organizing an illegal sideshow during an internet celebrity’s visit to the Bay Area last year, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said Monday.
Prosecutors charged Axel Cisnerosmentos and Aron Anaya with organizing or facilitating a sideshow and for aiding and abetting a speed contest. Both men are scheduled to be arraigned May 27 at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
“Sideshows are not harmless gatherings,” Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson said in a statement. “These illegal events routinely cause vandalism, reckless driving, injuries, property damage, and pose significant threats to public safety. Individuals who organize, promote, and facilitate these activities will be held accountable.”
The announcement comes months after IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., attracted throngs of fans during a livestreamed tour through San Francisco that included stops at Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown and City Hall.
The 20-year-old streamer, known for his energetic broadcasts and chaotic public appearances, drew massive crowds that at times clogged streets and sidewalks as fans chased him and his SUV across the city.
During his Oakland visit, Watkins, who is not suspected of any wrongdoing, expressed concern for people involved as he watched from atop the burger restaurant during his September livestream.
“What the hell?” Watkins said as people rushed toward a car spinning through the intersection near West Grand Avenue and Market Street. “Why are they running to the car? Are they stupid? Hold on, I can’t watch this.”
