John Carlson has fit like a glove with the Anaheim Ducks, and the two parties feel like a good fit to sign a long-term contract extension before he becomes a free agent. The Ducks’ blueliner came to the team in a shocking deal at the trade deadline from the Washington Capitals, and Pat Verbeek has interest in keeping him around, according to The Athletic’s Chris Johnston.

“The Anaheim Ducks have had exploratory talks on an extension with Carlson since acquiring him from the Washington Capitals at the trade deadline. The veteran defenseman remains a strong puck mover with a shot opponents need to respect. He put up an eye-catching 60 points between Anaheim and Washington, doing most of his damage at even strength, and he’s currently averaging more than 24 minutes per night for the Ducks in the playoffs. Clearly, Carlson’s still got game,” Johnston reported.

The shocking trade from the Capitals made some wonder whether the defenseman would return to the nation’s capital in free agency, creating a best-of-both-worlds scenario for Washington. However, the risk they ran if that was the strategy was that Carlson would fit in well in Anaheim and not want to leave.

Carlson and the Ducks are now battling it out in the second round against the Vegas Golden Knights, currently sitting in a 2-2 tie in the series. If Anaheim finds a way to the Western Conference Final with their young team, it’d be hard to argue with Carlson chasing one more Stanley Cup with the group.
