MLS-leading San Jose is headed to Lumen Field to play the Sounders.
Here’s a look at the match Wednesday:
Sounders (6-1-3) vs San Jose (9-1-2)
Time/place: 6:30 p.m. at Lumen Field in Seattle
TV: Apple TV
Radio: 93.3 KJR FM (English) and El Rey 1360 AM (Spanish)
Series history: Seattle leads the all-time series at 36-25-15 since 1974.
Clean sweep?
The Sounders are the only team to beat the Quakes this season (1-0 on March 15) and are the only ones to stop their potent offense. San Jose is tied with Vancouver in scoring a league-leading 27 goals.
Paul Rothrock bagged the game-winner in the 20th minute for the Sounders against San Jose at PayPal Park in March.
In the bulk of the Quakes’ other matches, striker Preston Judd is unstoppable. Judd, an afterthought in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft with the 35th overall pick, has a career-high eight goals.
San Jose is expected to be without German international Timo Werner (leg) and assist-leader Niko Tsakiris (seven) because of injuries.
Looking for goals
The Sounders found an equalizer off a corner kick in their 1-1 draw against San Diego at Lumen last week. It’s their fourth off a set piece, which leads the league. But the Sounders are struggling to score consistently.
Quotable
“He’s got some street soccer in him,” Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said of why new signee Peter Kingston has become one of the first subs off the bench. “He’s a good athlete. It’s a different look than Kalani (Kossa-Rienzi) or Alex (Roldan) at that position. (Peter) can run all day, that’s another quality that I like. Lots of good starting points.”
