The Chula Vista Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint this week to discourage impaired driving.
The checkpoint will operate from 6 p.m. to midnight at an undisclosed location within the city, according to the department.
Police select checkpoint locations based on data regarding impaired driving-related crashes. The primary goal is to promote safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” CVPD Agent Brian Carter said in a statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
The department reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also interfere with driving.
First-time DUI offenders can face up to $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, the department stated.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
