LAKEWOOD — Unfinished business sealed with a shutout. That’s the mantra Long Beach Wilson first-year coach Raudric Curtis said defined his team’s 23-0 victory over Lakewood.
The victory gave Wilson its first outright league title since 1991.
“(Unfinished business) means that every single team in our league that scheduled us for homecoming, that thought my confidence was bluster and mistook my belief in myself as a diminishing of them, no more,” Curtis said. “You will respect us. You will challenge what you used to think of Wilson, and you realize that there is a new show in town. A lot of teams had their success but it is the age of Wilson now.”
Wilson, which ran for more than 200 yards, improved to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the Moore League. The Bruins found redemption after last season’s 44-7 loss to Lakewood.
Wilson senior quarterback Mack Cooper, who is committed to Prairie View A&M, completed 8 of 12 passes for 113 yards yards and two touchdowns.
“My role I feel is all leadership now,” Cooper said. “That game, I didn’t go out there to do something special to win this game. Our team, we played very oriented football together and we did that (Thursday night). We killed it on the ground. My running backs, the O-line, killed it the whole time.”
Wilson senior running Kori Scott went over 1,000 rushing yards for the season. He finished the game with 87 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries.
“I play for the team,” Scott said. “I try and do everything I can to help everybody else. Like you said, I’m a workhorse. I try and do everything I can to get more yards, to score and help everybody out.”
Cooper said Scott is an integral part of Wilson’s success.
“Kori is just a straight-up football player,” Cooper said. “He’s only thinking about football and candy. Every time I talk to him it’s M&Ms and touchdowns. He’s just a guy that knows where to be and he has that instinct on the field of how to run and where to go.”
Scott’s inside running prowess helped wear down the Lakewood defense, which allowed sophomore running back Jemel Grigsby to have a team-high 98 rushing yards on 11 carries. Grigsby finished with 120 yards of total offense (98 rushing, 22 receiving).
Lakewood (6-3, 4-2) was led by senior quarterback Kade Casillas, who completed 10 of 19 passes for 97 yards. Junior running back Jordan Montgomery ran for 27 yards on 12 carries.
The Lancers dropped to 6-4 overall and earned a third-place finish in the Moore League with a 4-2 league record.
Prior to the game, both teams had already clinched automatic playoff berths. The CIF Southern Section football playoff brackets are scheduled to be released Sunday morning.
Lakewood senior Tiwan Jones began the game with a 45-yard kickoff return, which put the ball at midfield. The Lancers’ offense moved into the red zone and decided to go for it when they faced fourth-and-7 at the Wilson 13.
The Bruins’ defense stepped up and forced a turnover on downs.
Wilson capitalized on the momentum with a nearly six-minute scoring drive, capped by a pump fake followed by Cooper’s 30-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Kyle Harris. The Bruins led 7-0 with 2:15 left in the first quarter.
Wilson began the second quarter with the ball. The Bruins went on another six-minute scoring drive, this time capped by Scott’s 1-yard touchdown. Wilson led 14-0 with 5:47 left in the second.

Grigsby’s 48-yard run flipped the field and put the Bruins in the red zone on their next possession. However, Wilson’s drive stalled out but sophomore kicker Leo Osorio made a 30-yard field goal to go up 17-0 with 33 seconds left in the second.
Casillas’ backwards pass to Montgomery was fumbled and recovered by the Bruins at the Lakewood 22 with 26 to seconds go in the first half.
After the turnover, Cooper threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Thomas Jones to go up 23-0 with 4 seconds left before halftime. The PAT was no good.
Jones’ 85-yard kick return for a touchdown, which would have put Lakewood on the scoreboard, was called back due to a penalty.
Wilson kicked off again, this time with an onside kick to go into halftime up 23-0.
The Bruins amassed 230 yards of total offense (144 rushing, 86 passing) in the first half, and held the Lancers to 49 yards of total offense (25 rushing, 24 passing) early.
Lakewood’s best scoring chance in the second half, ended with an incomplete pass on a fourth-and-6 from the Wilson 10 with 6:27 left in the game.
