BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A proposed sewer rate increase in Bakersfield has been put on hold after the City Council voted to postpone discussion until its next meeting on May 27.

The decision came after hours of public comment from residents concerned about the impact of higher sewer bills.
Under the proposal, annual sewer rates would gradually increase from about $247 to as much as $875 over the next several years. City officials say the increases are needed to pay for aging sewer infrastructure.
