The Long Beach-area’s track and field standouts will have several opportunities to bring home individual and team titles Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Championships at Moorpark High.
The Long Beach Poly boys will look to defend the program’s consecutive CIF-SS Division 1 titles.
The Long Beach Wilson girls are seeking to defend the program’s Division 1 title, with the ultimate goal of winning the program’s fourth consecutive CIF State title later this month.
The CIF-SS finals, which have four divisions, begin with the 4×100 relay at noon. Poly and Wilson will compete in both races.
The final running events are 4×400 relays. Again, Poly and Wilson will vie for event titles. The result of that race could secure team titles for the Poly boys and Wilson girls.Field events will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The top athletes across all four CIF-SS finals will qualify for the CIF-SS Masters Meet at Moorpark High on Saturday, March 23. From there, a select number of athletes will advance to the CIF State meet at Buchanan High in Clovis on May 29 and 30.
Among the local athletes and teams likely to be winners and or earn points in their CIF-SS divisions:
BOYS
Division 1
400: Long Beach Wilson junior Kaedyn Burroughs (47.18) and Long Beach Poly senior Noah Smith (47.55) are the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. Poly senior Jaylen McNeil (48.90) is the No. 8 seed.
800: Long Beach Wilson senior Jordan Kincherlow (1:53.20) and junior Darieon Shufford (1:53:84) are the No. 5 and No. 7 seeds, respectively.
3,200: Warren junior Joaquim Sandoval is the No. 9 seed in 9:14.80.
100 hurdles: Long Beach Poly senior Lynnox Newton (13.98) and Armon Bly (14.51) are the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively.

300 hurdles: This could be another strong event for the Jackrabbits. Newton, Bly and sophomore Kingston Pierre all made the finals.
4×100 relay: Long Beach Poly is the No. 2 with a time of 41.13. Wilson is the No. 7 seed in 41.45.
4×400 relay: Long Beach Wilson and Long Beach Poly will compete for this title. It would be an upset if someone other than a Long Beach team won it, but watch out for Loyola, which is coached by former Jordan coach Sharaud Moore.
4×800 relay: Long Beach Wilson and Millikan made the finals. Both teams have the potential to place higher than their No. 4 and No. 9 seeds, respectively.
High jump: Zion Chambers, Los Alamitos. The senior is the No. 1 seed with a jump of 6 feet and 4 inches.
Pole vault: Los Alamitos junior Aaron Li is the No. 9 seed.
Long jump: Long Beach Poly seniors Jaydin Lawrence and Khalen Shepherd are the No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, respectively. Wilson sophomore Jeremiah Murphy is the No. 7 seed.
Shot put: Warren senior Kymani Hollis is the No. 4 seed with a mark of 56 feet and 11 inches.
Division 2
1,600: Leonardo Diaz, Norwalk. The senior ran 4:19.44 at prelims to advance to the finals.
Division 3
200: Justin Hayes, Mayfair. The senior ran 21.30 in the prelims and could be pulled to a fast time with two Servite runners in the race.
4×800 relay: St. John Bosco is the No. 1 seed with 7:59.73. They will battle Trinity League rival JSerra for the title.
Division 4
100: Kenneth Peevy III, St. Pius X-St. Matthias. The senior ran 10.66 in the prelims. With a slight improvement, he could win the finals.
200: Peevy ran 21.33 and is the No. 1 seed going into the finals.
400: Johnny McNeil, St. Pius X-St. Matthias. The junior is the No. 1 seed with a 48.39.
GIRLS
Division 1
100: Jaela Brown, Brown. The sophomore is the fastest qualifier in 11.79. Poly senior Aniyah Brooks is the No. 2 seed in 11.82.
200: Clara Adams, Long Beach Wilson. The junior ran a blazing 23.47 in the 200 at prelims. She is the fastest qualifier by nearly one second. Brooks is the No. 4 seed in 24.42. Brown is the No. 8 seed in 24.56.
400: Long Beach Wilson’s Brooklyn Fowler, Brooke Blue, Saniah Varnado and Clara Adams are the fastest four qualifiers in the program’s signature event. All have personal bests under 55 seconds.

800: Laila Kirk, Long Beach Poly. The freshman is the second-fastest qualifier at 2:10.20. Wilson juniors Shirayah Lewis-Williams (2:11:11) and Riley Jones (2:12:94) will also be in the finals.
3,200: Warren junior Alyssa Huerta is the No. 9 seed in 11:00.12.
100 hurdles: Kadence Bain, Long Beach Poly. The junior is the fastest qualifier in 14.18. Wilson junior Saniah Varnado is No. 4 with 14.42.
300 hurdles: Bain (42.61) and Varnado (42.72) are the top two seeds. Millikan’s Audrey Hutcherson is the seventh-fastest qualifier in 44.55.
4×100 relay: Long Beach Poly (46.65) and Long Beach Wilson (46.85) are the top two seeds, respectively. Warren and Millikan are the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.
4×400 relay: Long Beach Wilson and Long Beach Poly will compete for this title. It would be an upset if someone other than a Long Beach team won it.
4×800 relay: Long Beach Wilson is the No. 2 seed at 9:23.73 but has the potential to run under 9 minutes.
Pole vault: Warren senior Avery Carrillo made the finals by clearing 11 feet.
Long jump: Long Beach Poly junior Zayla Ridley is the No. 6 seed.
Triple jump: Journii Spencer, Long Beach Wilson. The senior, who holds the school record, is the No. 1 seed with a mark of 37 feet and 6.5 inches. Los Alamitos’ Stavroula Liarakos, Olivia Martinez and Jaelyn Guidry, are the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 seeds, respectively.
Discus: Millikan’s Ellie Carr and Warren’s Madina Dieng made the finals.
Division 3
100: Jadamarie McDuffie, St. Joseph. The junior ran 11.88 in the prelims and will try to break up Calabasas’ top four sweep.
200: McDuffie is also looking to surprise in the 200.
Discus: Maria Cuevas, La Mirada. The sophomore is the No. 1 seed with a throw of 117 feet and 5 inches.
Division 4
100: Dylan Nelson, St. Pius X-St. Matthias. The junior ran 11.95 in the prelims. She is a dark horse title contender.
200: Nelson is in the finals for her signature event. She qualified for the state meet as a freshman.
4×100 relay: St. Pius X-St. Matthias ran 48.68 in the prelims and will compete against Rosary Academy and Serra for the title.
