Elon Musk has reacted to the death of a San Francisco cat that was killed by a Waymo driverless vehicle.
KitKat, a nine-year-old cat who lived at Randa’s Market in San Francisco, was run over by a self-driving Waymo car on Monday.
Responding to the incident, the account Whole Mars Catalog wrote on X: “5.4 million cats are hit by cars every year in the U.S., and 97 percent of those cats die from their injuries. Autonomy will dramatically reduce that number.”
Musk later responded: “True, many pets will be saved by autonomy.”
Autonomous self-driving cars should in theory be able to detect animals, stopping or slowing down faster, and lowering the number of collisions.
Newsweek contacted Waymo for comment by email outside of regular working hours.

This is a developing story. More to follow.
