OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — A beloved Oakland sports bar that shut down earlier this year is making a comeback. The Oakland Athletic Club closed back in February, pouring its last drink on Feb. 8, Super Bowl Sunday.

But on Friday, it was announced that the bar would be reopening next month at its former location, 59 Grand Avenue in Oakland’s Uptown neighborhood. In a social media post Friday, one of the bar’s apparent new owners revealed the news.

“We’re six Oakland residents who couldn’t watch this block stay dark,” wrote Chris Pastena, chef and former owner of Chop Bar in Oakland. “When the Athletic Club Oakland closed on Super Bowl Sunday, we mourned the loss alongside of you. Then we made some calls. Then we made a decision to bet on Oakland.”

The bar, Pastenas said, would maintain its “sports bar soul,” with “the screens, the sound,” and “the energy” it’s known for. The reopened bar will still be home to supporters’ groups for the Athletics, Arsenal FC in the English Premier League, and the Golden State Warriors.

“To the 68s, East Bay Gooners, Dub Nation: your home base is still here,” Pastena said. “The room where rival fans shared a toast. That doesn’t go away.”

The reopened bar will also be launching new food and drinks programs, a private event room, and a lounge. A VIP room on the bar’s mezzanine and a merch section repping The Town, Pastena said.

“This is a gathering place for all of Oakland — for the die-hards and the casuals, the regulars and the first-timers, the fans of every team that calls this city home,” Pastena said. “From the Roots faithful to Dub Nation to the Valkyries, Storm and Soul.”

Although an exact reopening date has not been announced, the post said the bar is set to open sometime in June, by which time the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be underway.
