Boston Legacy FC overcame an early red card on the road to salvage a 1-1 tie with Bay FC on Friday night.
The hard-earned point for the Legacy gives them a point in five straight games and improves their record to 2-5-3. Boston, which lost the first five games of its inaugural season and scored only one goal over that span, is currently tied with the Denver Summit, North Carolina Courage and Angel City for 11th place in the National Women’s Soccer League standings.
In the 42nd minute against Bay FC, Legacy defender Bianca St-Georges received her second red card of the season for violent conduct on Claire Hutton.
Bay FC took advantage and opened the scoring with Dorian Bailey’s left-footed strike in the 50th minute. After a foul in the box by Bay keeper Jordan Silkowitz, who received a yellow card, Amanda Gutierres tied it for the Legacy on a penalty kick in the 64th.
“At halftime it wasn’t about discussing what we did in the first half, it was about how can we go out in the second half and put out a better performance and stick through it,” Legacy goalie Casey Murphy said. “We knew they were going to press us and we just had to stay strong, so we had our new strategy going into the second half. That’s what makes great teams, teams that are able to adapt, teams that are able to fight, teams that don’t give up. So just really proud of everyone for further effort tonight. And now we have a few more days to prepare for our next game, which will be great.”
Boston returns home for its next game against Seattle Reign FC next Friday. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Centreville Bank Stadium. It’s the first time the Legacy have played there this season after playing their previous home games at Gillette Stadium.
