Three people are dead and at least five others sustained injuries, some serious, after a driver ran over a group of people on a sidewalk in East Oakland last night.
The speeding vehicle struck pedestrians at 11:15 outside a corner store at 85th and International, according to Oakland Fire Department spokesperson Michael Hunt.
When emergency responders arrived, three victims were already deceased. Three more were transported to hospitals, two in critical condition and one with serious injuries. And two other people, including the suspected driver, had minor injuries.
Fire department officials said the driver attempted to flee the scene of the crash but was stopped and detained by bystanders.
The intersection was soon swarmed by police and fire vehicles.

OPD hasn’t issued any statement about the crash yet. The department’s decision to encrypt its radio traffic prevented The Oaklandside from learning more about how emergency personnel responded. And OPD did not immediately respond to questions from The Oaklandside about the identity of the driver and victims, or the events leading up to the crash.
The East Bay Times and San Francisco Chronicle reported that the suspected driver is under the age of 18.
KTVU reported that a crash involving a black SUV and a blue vehicle preceded the deadly collision. After the vehicles hit each other, the SUV reportedly jumped the sidewalk at a high rate of speed and rammed a group of pedestrians.
