A man who fled to Mexico after shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend in Tustin earlier this week has been arrested, according to police.
The shooting was reported Thursday near the intersection of Medford Avenue and Yorba Street, according to the Tustin Police Department. There, Juan Marquez, 47, of Hawthorne, laid in wait near his ex-girlfriend’s workplace and shot her, police said.
The victim, Sandra Fernandez, 42, of Anaheim, died at the scene.
After the shooting, Marquez fled to Mexico through the San Ysidro Port of Entry, police said. Detectives identified the suspect and said he was responsible for the shooting, prompting them to obtain an arrest warrant.
Marquez was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Saturday as he returned to the U.S. through the border checkpoint.
The suspect was booked into the Orange County Jail and charged with murder. He is being held without bail.
A possible motive for the shooting was not disclosed.
