San Francisco recorded another homicide early Sunday in the Sunset District, amid an unexpected surge in killings this year in the city.
Officers responded around 5:21 a.m. to a shooting on the 2500 block of 46th Avenue, according to the San Francisco Police Department – blocks from Ocean Beach and the San Francisco Zoo.
After finding a victim with gunshot wounds, officers and paramedics provided aid, but the victim was declared dead on the scene, police said.

The department did not provide any details about the victim, a potential suspect or any possible motivation. The shooting is under investigation by the police department’s homicide detail.
This marks at least the 17th slaying so far this year in San Francisco. As of May 10, the police department has recorded 16 homicides, double the same period last year.
The city is struggling with a spike in gun violence and killings after 2025 saw the lowest number of homicides in seven decades, even as other reported crimes continue to decline after the pandemic.
In April, San Francisco leaders publicly pleaded for peace, calling for a 24-hour ceasefire. Hours later, a victim was shot and hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
