A body was recovered Sunday afternoon from Cottonwood Lake at Hellyer County Park in San Jose after a person was reported in distress in the water, authorities said.
Santa Clara County Parks rangers were alerted about 1:40 p.m., according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies, San Jose firefighters and the sheriff’s dive team were called in to search the lake.
The dive team found the body during the search, and the person was pronounced dead at 4:11 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities had not confirmed the person’s identity Sunday evening. The Santa Clara County coroner will conduct an autopsy.
It was not immediately clear why the person entered the lake, the sheriff’s office said.
Hellyer County Park is a 178-acre county park in San Jose, where Cottonwood Lake is a central feature. Fishing is permitted at the lake year-round, according to Santa Clara County Parks.
