An 8-year-old boy died at a hospital after he was struck by a car in North Long Beach over the weekend, authorities said.
Long Beach police were called to Paramount Boulevard and 56th Street about 4:40 p.m. Saturday, May 16, and found Long Beach Fire Department paramedics attempting to help the boy, police said.
Police believe the boy ran into the street along Paramount and was hit by a 2020 Honda Civic traveling southbound, police said.
Why the boy ran into traffic lanes was not known.
The car’s driver remained on scene, and police do not believe speed, distracted driving or impaired driving were factors in the crash, they said.
Whether the boy’s parents were present at the time of the crash was unclear. They were with the boy at the hospital, police said.
“Our hearts are with this young child’s family, and everyone affected by this terrible traffic collision,” Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish said in a statement. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly unexpected tragedies can occur and is a solemn reminder of the importance of doing all we can to ensure everyone’s safety on our roadways.”
