The 99th Annual Fresno City Amateur Golf Championship returns to Riverside Golf Course in northwest Fresno Memorial Day weekend, continuing one of California’s longest-running amateur sports traditions.
The championship was first played in 1927 and has since become one of the largest amateur golf events in California.
This year’s tournament is from May 23-25 and includes many of California’s top amateur golfers competing in a 54-hole medal play format.
Among the players is Asterisk Talley, a Fresno-born standout who is regarded as one of the top junior golfers in the world. Talley has represented the United States in the Curtis Cup and Junior Solheim Cup and gained national attention after becoming the first player to reach three USGA championship finals in a single year.
Also competing is Michael Weaver, a former Clovis West standout who finished second at the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championships and earned invitations to both the Masters and U.S. Open.
Tournament legend Danny Paniccia and rising talent Ayden Fynutt are also in the field.
The championship is part of a partnership with the Northern California Golf Association and is open to amateur golfers with a handicap index of 5.0.
Tournament director Keith Berry said the event continues to showcase elite amateur golf while celebrating Fresno’s deep golf tradition ahead of the championship’s 100th anniversary in 2027.
“The Fresno City Amateur has been a cornerstone of Central Valley golf for nearly 100 years,” Berry said. “We’re proud to continue this tradition and bring some of the best amateur players in California to Fresno. This tournament has a deep history and continues to be a special event for players, fans, and the entire community.”
Spectators are free to attend throughout the weekend. Additional tournament information is available at fresnocityamateur.com.
