WASHINGTON (TNND) — The Treasury Department’s general counsel resigned after the IRS settled a $10 billion lawsuit with President Donald Trump over the leak of his tax returns.

Treasury Department General Counsel Brian Morrissey resigned on Monday after the Justice Department launched a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” as part of the settlement, The Hill reported. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said that the fund would compensate “victims of lawfare and weaponization.”

The Treasury Department will oversee the DOJ fund payouts into an account managed by a group of people that Blanche appoints.

Trump nominated Morrissey to be the Treasury’s general counsel last year, after he previously served as the principal deputy general counsel for the department and was a clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

A Treasury spokesperson confirmed Morrissey’s resignation to The Hill on Tuesday.

“As General Counsel, Brian Morrissey has served the United States Treasury with both honor and integrity. We wish him all the best in his next endeavors,” the spokesperson said.Comment with Bubbles
