Dave Flemming has added yet another national television job to his long list of responsibilities away from the San Francisco Giants.

On Tuesday, NBC announced it had named Flemming as its play-by-play broadcaster for the “MLB Sunday Leadoff” games, a weekly traveling national telecast on NBC Sports Network and Peacock that typically starts at noon local time. Flemming’s first game will be this Sunday in Toronto, calling the upstart Pirates taking on the defending American League champion Blue Jays.

“Dave is an elite play-by-play announcer whose knowledge and love for the game comes through in his storytelling and big-game calls for national and local audiences,” NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood said in NBC’s news release. “We are excited to have Dave join our lineup beginning this weekend.”

In the same news release, Flemming said: “I’m excited to join NBC Sports’ baseball coverage. I’ve really enjoyed NBC’s approach to covering the sport I love so far this season and I’m very happy to be a part of it.”

Flemming has been with the Giants since 2004 and is primarily heard on radio broadcasts on KNBR-AM/FM. But he’s been calling more and more games on television as his longtime partners Mike Krukow, Duane Kuiper and Jon Miller all have decreased the number of games they broadcast on the road.

As the 49-year-old’s profile has grown, he’s added national broadcasting gigs that occasionally pull him away from Giants games. Flemming has been with ESPN since 2010, primarily covering college basketball and football. He added some MLB games for the network in 2014 and has helped with Little League World Series coverage at times, too. Since 2022, Flemming has called the World Series for MLB’s international telecast, with quite a few memorable calls from those games. Flemming has also been a part of ESPN’s golf coverage in recent years — including last week at the PGA Championship in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

The main San Francisco broadcast team — Flemming, Krukow, Kuiper and Miller — is still considered one of the best in the sport, if not the best. But with Flemming’s other commitments and the other three’s ramp-down of games, the Giants have added a deeper bench of broadcasters. Longtime San Jose Giants broadcaster Joe Ritzo and former Giants player F.P. Santangelo have been the regular call-up broadcasters for the radio when the main crew isn’t available. And this year, former A’s broadcaster (and Duane’s brother) Glen Kuiper has started calling Giants games on KNBR about three years after he was fired for uttering a racial slur on an A’s telecast.

It isn’t clear who would be the primary fill-in for Flemming, or what the team will do for its television road broadcasts if none of its three main play-by-play announcers (Flemming, Duane Kuiper and Miller) are available. The Giants did not answer SFGATE’s questions about the plans to fill in for Flemming, but spokesperson Shana Daum sent over a statement after publication.

“Dave is an integral part of Giants baseball on KNBR and NBC Sports Bay Area, and we are thrilled that baseball fans across the country will now also get to experience his special talent that we all love and appreciate on NBC Sports for MLB Sunday Leadoff,” Daum’s statement read.

Flemming will obviously miss Sunday broadcasts for the Giants in this new role, but the team has dealt with this before, when Miller called “Sunday Night Baseball” for ESPN. But the specific early-in-the-day time slot for “MLB Sunday Leadoff” and a schedule that primarily consists of East Coast road games could mean that Flemming needs to miss a few Saturday games, particularly if they are late afternoon or evening games.
