A Sacramento security guard has been arrested on a voluntary manslaughter warrant following a fatal shooting during a reported burglary earlier this month, according to the Sacramento Police Department.
Police said officers responded just after 4:30 a.m. May 8 to a business in the 8500 block of Thys Court after receiving reports of a burglary in progress. Additional callers also reported a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found an adult male burglary suspect suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said. Despite lifesaving efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel.
Investigators said a second adult male burglary suspect later arrived at a hospital with at least one gunshot wound. He was reported to be in stable condition.
According to police, a security guard, believed to have shot the two suspects, remained at the scene and was detained by officers.
The case was later turned over to homicide detectives and crime scene investigators, who processed evidence and interviewed witnesses.
After what police described as a thorough investigation, detectives obtained a voluntary manslaughter arrest warrant for 55-year-old Joseph Mills of Sacramento.
Police said Mills was arrested May 19 on the warrant as well as weapons-related charges and was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased after the next of kin are notified.
