Flames damaged a two-story apartment building Thursday morning in Sherman Oaks.
The fire was reported on the upper floor of an apartment on Dickens Street, near the intersection of Ventura and Beverly Glen boulevards.
Residents were evacuated as firefighters cut holes in the roof to ventilate the building, allowing heat and smoke to escape. Flames and smoke could be seen rising through the roof.
It was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured.
Firefighters with an oxygen mask appeared to be treating a small dog on the ground outside the apartment.
