BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Volunteers spent Friday afternoon placing American flags on veterans’ graves ahead of Memorial Day, continuing a tradition organizers say helps the community recognize the sacrifices made by local veterans and their families.
The Kern County Veterans Service Department will host its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at Historic Union Cemetery.
Jose Lopez, director of the Kern County Veterans Service Department, said a wide range of community members turned out to help with the flag placement.
“We had Garces High School, probation, nurses, Boy Scout troops, Liberty High, a lot of amazing people from the community lending a hand,” Lopez said.
