BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An environmental cleanup is underway in Bakersfield after 1,000 barrels of produced water spilled at a treatment center on Thursday near Zerker Road and Seventh Standard Road.
Produced water is a byproduct that comes out of the ground during oil and gas extraction. The spill was reported to the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services by someone with E&B Natural Resources, who reported that no crude oil was mixed with the water.
The spill is believed to have been caused by corrosion of a storage tank. A vacuum truck was called in to help with the cleanup.

As of yesterday, the spill had been contained, although the leak was still active. No injuries were reported.
