After all the scores were accounted for in Friday’s CIF San Diego Section Gymnastics Meet at Rancho Bernardo High School, Westview once again made history.
One week after breaking the section record for most points at a meet with 227.800, the Wolverines scored 0.150 more points Friday to win the program’s fifth straight section crown.
“This is the best team we’ve ever had,” Westview coach Diane Wavrik said. “We don’t have any seniors, so that’s even more exciting for the future. Just so wonderfully proud of them.”
In the optional session, the Wolverines were led by Joyce Chen, who was the beam champion at 9.700 points and finished second in all-around scoring at 36.875 points.
Mt. Carmel finished second in team scoring at 226.950 points, marking its best team score at a section meet. Kara Seiter helped the Sundevils win the optional vault title to place fourth in the all-around.
Del Norte’s Eva Lam won the optional all-around title at 37.025 points after placing fourth or better in all four events, finishing as the runner-up in vault and floor.
In addition, San Diego High’s Liliana Mendoza, who was last year’s all-around optional champion, finished 13th in the all-around scoring, including placing 11th in beam.
Rounding out the top five in team scoring were Del Norte at 219.250 points, West Hills at 211.075 points and Steele Canyon at 208.100.

Westview’s Ulbrich breaks all-around compulsory score to win title
One week after Westview’s Louisa Ulbrich recorded the highest vault score in the section at 9.900, she broke another section record, registering a 39.050 all-around score in the compulsory session, highlighted by scoring at least 9.750 points in all four events.
That record was previously held by both Mt. Carmel’s Shelby Bruce in 2009 and Fallbrook’s Sarah Engebretson in 2014, who had a 39.000 all-around score.
“She’s strong on every event,” Wavrik said of Ulbrich, who won the vault title and was the runner-up in bars and beam. “She is a very beautiful, calm and confident competitor.”
In addition, Westview’s Kaushika Nayak won the compulsory floor title at 9.950 points, tying a section record that was previously set in 2023.
Mt. Carmel’s Sol D’Angelo, who was voted by the coaches as the Gymnast of the Year, won the compulsory bars and floor events at 9.825 and 9.925 points, respectively, and finished 0.450 points behind Ulbrich in the all-around scoring.
“I think my floor was really good, and I think it was because of the energy that my team brought,” said D’Angelo, who also earned the All-CIF San Diego Section Gymnasts of the Year honors last year. “I think we had the most cheering and the most support we’ve had the entire season.”
Mt. Carmel’s Yana Pavlova and Kari Kohlbrecher placed third and fourth. Westview’s Katie Reed rounded out the top five in all-around scoring.
Rancho Bernardo’s Sidney Antique, who finished sixth in compulsory all-around scoring, won the beam title with a 9.825 score.

Mt. Carmel coach bids farewell
Friday marked Mt. Carmel coach Monique Lamphiere-Tamayoshi’s final meet. She is retiring after a coaching career that’s lasted 37 years.
“She’s had such an impact on the program and such an impact on me, not just in my gymnastics, but me as a person,” D’Angelo said of her coach. “She teaches us so many important life moments.”
